Roller Skating Babes + A Retro Phoenix Date Night!
Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at 10:40 AM
While we can't guarantee that you'll have the sass of those tough roller derby girls zipping around the rink, we can promise that you will have a blast with our $10 Phoenix deal for admission, rentals, pizza, and soda for two people at USA Skateland! Remember your teenage days of yore, grab those acid washed jeans and sweaty palms, and roller skate your heart out!
Roller skating was invented in 1760 by Joseph Merlin, a Belgian inventor who unveiled his roller skates at a London party while simultaneously playing a violin. As soon as he put his newfangled skates on, he crashed into a mirror and broke his nose. Yes, this sounds crazy, but it is the first publicly documented appearance of roller skates. While Merlin wasn't interested in his roller skates after this experience, others were, and began to recreate his magical (and thrillingly dangerous!) skates. Roller discos were a hit in the seventies, with approximately 3,500 to 4,000 rinks in operation at that time. There were also a couple of films that paid homage to the art of skating with strobe lights and disco balls, including the silly musical Xanadu, Roller Boogie, and Skatetown, U.S.A., which was Patrick Swayze's first-ever film!
Let the beat live on by visiting your local roller skating rink, or by grabbing our USA Skateland deal in Phoenix! And now, a sweet little roller dance from these dancing babes:
