May Day Deals To Help You Make Some Merry!

Happy May Day, merrymakers! Birds are chirping like we're in a Disney movie, summer is right around the corner, and maypole ribbons are a-swingin'. May Day is an ancient spring festival that originated among pre-Christian European cultures during the Middle Ages. The holiday is one of the year’s four days that falls midway between an equinox and a solstice; the March equinox and June solstice, to be exact. In the Middle Ages, most European villages had maypoles, which were carved from trees brought in from the woods. Some villages even competed with others to see who could get the tallest and most elaborately decorated maypole. Villagers would attach ribbons and flowers to the maypole, and dance around the pole as a way to welcome the return of the long-awaited summer. Anthropologists still argue about the symbolism of the pole; whether it is a symbol of fertility, the earth's axis, or as a way to honor the importance of trees. Whatever the maypole means, to this day May Day is remembered as a raucous holiday that glorifies the renewal of another year.
